When, in the 1950s, ambitious young businessman Jack Harkin goes into partnership with Olaf, a middle-aged Lithuanian and his wife Sylva, he little realises how profoundly it will change his life...

As he gets to know them better, he gradually learns of their horrifying experiences in war-torn Eastern Europe, of their struggle to escape to the West after the war and of the baby daughter they were forced to leave behind.

A quarter of a century later, the past comes back to haunt them all ~ with unexpected consequences.
