by Josephine Duggan Rees
My experiences as a Land Girl in the Women's Land Army during World War II

Readers have told us how much they enjoyed this warm-hearted memoir and its depictions of rural life in Britain during the Second World War.

At the outbreak of World War Two, the author was one of the thousands of young women who responded to the Government’s call for female workers to take up jobs in the countryside to replace the young men who had been called up to join the armed forces.

From a suburban background, 17-year-old Josephine had no prior experience of country life but she took to the challenge with enthusiasm, although her ignorance of rural ways often led her into embarrassing and sometimes hilarious escapades, which are recorded here in a well written narrative which is guaranteed to entertain readers of all ages.

Long before the days of women's liberation  the land girls could encounter sexism of various kinds  from the elderly male farmhands they worked alongside and were therefore eager to prove themselves equal to any task they were given .

The author was no exception and her descriptions of her encounters with a variety of uncooperative animals and machines are often very amusing indeed.
